Hong Kong Haul

February 18, 2014 · Leave a Comment

I went on a very fun and productive shopping trip to one of my favorite places in New Orleans! The Hong Kong Market is in Gretna on the West Bank. It's a huge asian market that is filled with lots of goodies! I don't make it here as often as I'd like. The drive always seems worse than it is. The trick is to go mid-day when there is no chance of hitting traffic. This is an awesome place to go for produce, it's so CHEAP. I love it. They have a large selection of noodles, sauces, and every asian condiment you can think of. It is well worth the drive. These are all the things I got today, and it was all under $30!

Some of the things I picked up today:

  • romaine lettuce, ¢.99
  • baking potatoes, 2 for $1
  • snow peas, $1.60
  • napa cabbage, $1.05
  • scallions, ¢.50
  • cilantro ¢.69

  • baby carrots, $1.19
  • curry pastes, $1.10 each
  • coconut milk, $1.29 each
  • shrimp spring rolls, $3.50
  • bamboo shoots, ¢.99

If you know of an asian market in your area, you should definitely check it out. I can make a healthy and delicious curry with coconut milk and fresh vegetables for less than $1o! I love the yellow sour curry paste, I can't wait to make something with it soon!

Another bonus when you shop here, the $3 lunch. If you go towards the bakery/prepared foods section, they have a small area where they make banh mi. If you are unfamiliar with banh mi, it is a Vietnamese sandwich that is usually comprised of meat, paté, cilantro, pickled vegetables, sriracha, cucumber, jalapeños and spicy mayo. You may not always know what's on it, but it's always good. It hit the spot and was just what I needed for the long ride home. Until next time Hong Kong……..
